Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Armaan Verma, Shahana Goswami, Dalip Tahil, Satish Shah
Director: Anubhav Sinha
Superhero film Ra.One kicks off on an unusual note, as geeky tech-wiz dad Shekhar Subramaniam, played by Shah Rukh Khan, tries to become his young son’s hero by creating the greatest video-game villain of all time. Named Ra.One in a not-so-subtle reference to The Ramayan‘s Lanka king, this super-villain almost immediately shows signs of breaking out of his virtual world to wreak havoc and destruction in the real one. Yet even as danger is lurking around the corner, Ra.One’s creator Shekhar is distractedly working the dance floor with his wife.
To me, this moment sums up the entire experience of watching this ambitious but flawed superhero film — every time we’re drawn into the simplistic but intriguing story of how Ra.One can only be vanquished by the game’s superhero G.One (also played by Shah Rukh), director Anubhav Sinha feels the desperate need to inject a dance number or a comical sequence or a melodramatic interlude into the narrative. It’s distracting from the superhero theme and more importantly, it makes the film clunky.
Once again, it’s Shah Rukh Khan’s sheer presence and energy, coupled with the narrative’s don’t-stop-to-think pace that makes Ra.One watchable despite its flaws. This is an event movie, a spectacle, not really a film. It’s 2 hours 35 minutes of special effects, action sequences and superficial romantic and emotional entanglements. You can see the ambition and imagination that the makers have poured into this movie, and while it thankfully doesn’t succumb to the kind of lazy film-making we’ve seen recently in Rascals, Bodyguard, Ready or the Golmaal films, Ra.One clearly suffers from a case of cramming in too much. Frankly, in all this, the superhero theme itself gets a bit lost — G.One’s committment is towards protecting his family from Ra.One, not saving the world from evil. In the process, he’s less of a superhero than Superman, Batman, Spiderman or even Krrish; G.One is more of a personal bodyguard with special powers.
Yet adhering to the unwritten superhero rule, G.One too is born out of tragedy, when his creator Shekhar is killed by Ra.One. Strangely, despite the heavy funeral song, we’re barely convinced that wife and kid are grieving for Shekhar; so smoothly does G.One take his place in their lives. In their greed to make Ra.One an entertainment extravaganza, the writers inject innuendoes that come off as crass — like the thesis the so-called feminist wife is doing on Indian swear words, or the scene in which a gay airport security guard is turned on by G.One’s body piercings. The special appearances by Rajnikanth in a spoof of his own Robot, or a stylish early sequence featuring Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra only end up playing to the gallery. You’re also left wondering why there’s such an unhealthy obsession with the crotch, with so many scenes of grabbing, clutching, whacking or kicking it.
Ra.One heavily references films like Total Recall, The Matrix, Iron Man, X-Men and Terminator-2, yet there is a certain thrill attached to the action sequences. A car chase through London’s streets is rivaled by a local-train sequence in India where G.One leaps from one bogie to another. There’s also the mind-boggling sight of the beautiful Gothic structure of Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus crumbling as the train ploughs right through it. These portions make up for the long-drawn climatic battle between Ra.One and G.One fought in a rather tacky virtual world.
The only real standout performance is by Shah Rukh Khan. His Aiyyo-speaking Shekhar Subramaniam is caricaturish but charming, while as G.One, he gives even his robotic video-game character a charismatic edge. Kareena Kapoor, as Shekhar’s wife, provides the glamorous oomph factor as she shimmies to that fantastic number Chamak Challo, while Arjun Rampal makes a menacing Ra.One. However, too much screen time is wasted on the long-haired Armaan Verma who plays Shekhar’s son, while Shahana Goswami playing a video game developer, inexplicably vanishes from the screen midway through the story.
What’s missing from Ra.One is a sure-footed director’s touch. Anubhav Sinha fails to bring all the elements together, and while this superhero film has plenty sound and fury, it’s sorely lacking slickness. I’m going with two and a half out of five for Ra.One. Like the spaghetti and curds concoction that Shah Rukh digs into in an early scene, Ra.One is clearly an acquired taste.

horrible movie, I never seen such a pathetic movie ever , audions doesn’t concern with the efforts or budget, it only concerns with the entertainment, which I think its a complete waste of money. We all expect a si-fi movie to be atleast some relevant logic & its science should be between the present & future & which should be readily accept by the audions & they should think “Yeah, this thing might happen!” If we just only talk about indian movies, how man’s own made future computer in the Krish & roboe in Rajnikant movie becomes enemies to the mankind are some good logic & science which had made acceptedt the audions that such things may happened in the reality & this movie totally lacked of such logics. in short, RA.ONE is like a colourful Popsicle that looks tantalising, tickles the palate while it lasts, but leaves no particular after-taste.

SRK’s energy has worked out more than the script in Ra One…. It is an expensive movie with a hart… however kids enjoyed every bit of the movie as it is wholly made for them… Its high time Filmakers give more importance to story and screenplay… Wish Ra One Huge Success…

It’s a brave experiment, nowadays when everyone is making a remake, srk risks making a sc-fi style movie and I must say it pays off well, Though tits 7 bits of flawas are there but who is perfect anyways. i say its a funfilled chill movie, enjoyed it thorughly, every father should show this movie to his kids.

Seriously masand 2 and a half star for what ? I am begining to doubt your credibility now.Cmon man the movie is a comlete dud ,Superhero spoof’ movies are made better on Mtv,What is he fighting for what is the cause nothing, dud ,none.Superheros are suppose to be inspirational against injustice, corrupton or atleast opposite something else.He is against a virtual villan who doesnt even exist (lame,Super duper lame). If you personally no sharukh ask him to refund money.
Comment by jagdish — October 30, 2011 @ 11:12 pm
Well i think you are again spot on with this one. The movie had a good story but lacked story telling, i guess the sole intention from beginning of the movie was too entertain kids (so less thrill and easier and detailed stuff). The VFX were mindblowing with few scenes will be in the history books with scenes like jab pyaar kiya to darna (great cinematography of those times in color) from Mughal-e-azam. But the screenplay was naive maybe as it was first of its kind (super hero + regular indian stuff + sci-fi). The acting was good but expressions again not too deep but all the superhero details were great and fascinating again something that kids like. The thing i liked the most was that SRK went off his comfort zone (i dont understand people saying he can do only romance even after hit movies like chak de india, my name is khan, darr, bazigaar, dil se, swades where he isnt a traditional lover) and made a movie which was not an exact copy or remake of south or Hollywood movies a common trend of hit bollywood movies these days. Maybe indian crowd isnt broad minded to appreciate something like this, like people in hollywood do.

This was one of the best reviews of the movie. It looks like you actually saw the movie and not just wrote it out of your whimsy.
I really enjoyed the movie and it is a great achievement in terms of special effects and sci-fi genre. I hated Krissh because of its tackiness. But Ra.One is slick, fast, pacy and not at all cheezy.
Shahrukh deserves a salute for his superb conviction and determination.

it took 175 crore rs to make this biggest blunder of bollywood…. shahrukh has got success in romantic movies only…! i mean what does he think of himself at this age of BHUDAPA he went to be a superhero like RAJNIKANT ??? Gauri PLEASE apne husband ko samjhao…. uski budhi bhrasht ho gai hai…..!! Learn from Vidhu Vinod chopra to how to make films to get comercially success as well as critics success, it gained 358 crore rs by investing only 35 crore rs….that too with lesser number of prints….
PLEASE SPREAD THIS MESSAGE TO MAKE SHAHRUKH READ.

I am unsure and a bit shocked as to why you have been so generous and lenient with your review about Ra One. Its is singularly the most atrocious movie I have ever seen. It questions the intelligence of not just an adult watching it but even that of a ten year old kid.
Shahrukh Khan’s uninformed and cliche portrayal of a Tamilian is just crass and hardly charming. The story line was just pathetic and full of potholes. I normally respect your reviews… but this review was dissapointing

This movie was really disaappointing. How did the director mix comedy with Super hero stunts. The super Hero concept to everyone is action and not converting action into comedy. This was a far over confident effort and over do things trying to make to it entertaining with the basics expectations from audience point view totally missing. This movie 170 cr spent to entertain SRK sons

Mr Masand is so self-obsessed that he doesnt care reading our opinions and views. his reviews are overtly biased and shallow. He wudnt dare write anything bad about big stars like srk despite his pathetic performance in RA.ONE. because he doesnt want to lose the rapport that helps him arrange interviews with d stars on television. I pity him, inspite of so many negative feedbacks of his reviews, where does his credentials stand? is he anymore a film critic we lok upto? the answer is a clear no. Well, after watching Ra.one I couldn’t believe myself that this guy has acted in movies like My name is Khan, Chak De India(according to me, his acting in this movie was one of the best performances in Indian Cinema History), Swadesh, Veer Zaara, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman,Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge(but I didn’t liked the second half of DDLJ),Yes Boss, Hey Ram, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
I think the scriptwriter was totally freaked out frickle-minded.The story was completely disjointed in many parts. There is no originality in this movie. Everything is copied from the great Hollywood action flicks like Terminator 2, Spiderman, Speed(shivaji terminus scene), Superman 1978, Superman the animated series ( The Last son of Krypton) , Superman Returns 2006, Iron Man, The Matrix, Tron ( in Ra one it was reverse, the digitalized person escapes from the virtual world to the real world, and in tron it was the lead character accidentally finds himself in the virtual world), etc.
I think the producers should face heavy penalty for this kind of plagiarism.
I think Mr. Shah Rukh Khan should do movies like The Spy who Came from the cold( I have read the book and picturised Mr.Khan as the burned out spy), The Day of the jackal, Wall Street, or roles like a common man struggles for his own existence, Anti Hero type roles, or a film super star who had lost all his dignity, fame, ridiculed or blamed by everybody for things didn’t do, Schindler’s List type movies (in Indian version it will be like this – A Pakistani who tries to save some of the Indian soldiers who were caught in the Kargil War in the Pakistani soil after learning what humanity actually means).
I cannot believe that most of the Indian Reviewers gave it a positive review. How the hell they could give such a positive review in this one of the most crappiest movies in the world.
Kareena Kaapor looked good in this movie but her talent for acting was completely wasted. Arjun Rampaul made me a laugh throughout the whole movie. I was thinking whether he was RA.ONE or the Wrong.ONE. Tom Wu’s acting shouldn’t be talked about. It’s better to keep a secret of his pathetic acting. Aarman is one the most irritating actor in the movie. He tried to copy Edward Furlong who played John Connor in Terminator 2. The special effects in most of the parts of the movie was bad. Some are good. One of IMDb user named importexport15 written that the special effects of this movie is better than Avatar 2009. I think he/she was completely whacked out after watching this movie.
A message to MR.SHAH RUKH KHAN –
Mr. Khan, the time has come to select better script for your movies the way Mr. Aamir Khan, Mr. Amitabh Bachchann, Naseeruddin Shah does.
Sooner the better for your career.
Comment by Abhishek Ghosh — November 2, 2011 @ 2:00 pm
I heard Shahrukh say in his interview something like, “It doesn’t have to be all about money. This industry has given me so much, I want to pay back.” And damn, he makes RaOne. What a joke!!!!!!!
He calls it a children’s film and there is the scene in which he (accidentally?) throws his key into a passing by english woman’s bra, and asks her to give it (double meaninged) to him. The lady sitting on adjacent seat had to remain careful about covering her son’s eyes every now and then throughout the film.
Plotholes, there are more than a hundred. There is some bullshit about new technology and stuff which makes no sense at all.
The superhero keeps cowering in the shadow of his ‘dil’ (heart) throughout the film. One never feels like ‘Oh man! he is the real hero’ kind of thing.
The pacing is as awful as it could be. Just anytime, any nonsense would pop up, leaving one with a sour taste in your mouth. The movie sluggishly keeps moving here and there without any motto.
The RaOne, who can’t be defeated, after whom the film is named, who is the main antagonist, gets hardly 20 min of screentime, gets crushed in first fight and dies in second fight by solving a nonsense riddle.
The movie lacks in action. In the fight sequences (only 2), G1 and RaOne keep throwing a fireball on each other again and again, could the director not be a little more creative than that, there are 10 weapons provided when we play video games like Taken, Kung Fu etc or say watching Captain Vyom or Mahabharat… but here the same boring fireball, that also not something original….
The CST station breaking down is grade 1 special effects which any novice could undertake. I couldn’t see where was the technology and effects that the film promised. Couldn’t see where 450 crores was spent? In Robert Cavalli’s gown which she ripped with a scissors turning it into a skimpy outfit?
I used to respect SRK for his films and the fine man he is, but after this, I have lost all my respect for him. It’s the height of using stupid nonsense cheap shortcut ideas (Rajnikant movie spoof, double meanings, comments on crotch, dancers shaking their ass in songs, Kareena’s not-funny abuses), height of commercialisation, height of deceit (You design a character RaOne and G1 and you have no love or honesty to do justice to them).
Anubhav, I know you are talented, but I am not sure if I can congratulate you for the worst film of your career.
Happy birthday SRK. Wish that the actor dead in you takes a birth today.

This movie, the biggest disaster of our times, apt to pioneer the jargon ‘sleeper flop’ gets 2.5 stars (which, if I am not wrong, means something more than average?)??????????????
Rajeev, what is wrong with you….. Just because SRK is there, just because it’s a big budget film?
It stands in line with Red swastik, Dhoom Dhadaka, Rakht charitra, Ready, Haunted and all such rubbish…. It’s 1 or at max 1.5 stars.
Mind-boggling CST scene???? If you haven’t seen anything better, Go and see 2012, The day after tomorrow…
If Munna Bhai is 100 on comedy, this is not even 10.
If Matrix or Dark Knight is 100 on action, this is not even 5.
What a waste of money….
Can’t see how does it get 2.5 stars? Come on, man….

why was 80s cabaret music being played repeatedly!?!
why was ganesh idol left alone after that destruction, when clearly he empowered g one to stop the train!! (ROFL)
for wat reason did Chitti appear???
did They forget to bring the screenplay?

Ra-one doesn’t deserve 2.5 rating.first half of the movie is excellent and the flow of the 1st half was good.
2nd half is baseless and totally takes the turns , up and downs and 2nd half has the irrelevant scenes like family film/romantic film . comedy scenes are good which i have never scene in anubhav sinha’s previous movie so i think it’s shahrukh’s mind behind that and represents too with the first scene of the movie.they could have make it much better if they had a good vision of handling the 2nd half.as the movie is lacking in the 2nd half…..otherwise it would have been a block buster.
in super hero movie every body will expects some good special effect fights and chases which i never found in the movie .
overall……….idea was good but executed well.
shahrukh’s tamil is super i love it

Agreed. I saw the movie twice, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I felt completely the twists and turns and unpredictability of the films was brilliant! Music is awesome. Yes, far from perfect, but, once again I have to remind readers that you can NOT compare apples to oranges! Bollywood is a genre that is NOT Hollywood. Bollywood MUST have certain elements to remain true to the genre: song/dance/trains/fights/humor/etc….so this was a brilliant ground breaking ture-to-bollywood-drama film. So, based on that I would give it 4 out of 5 stars! Minus one for the extrea fluff!

All & All loved it. Don’t know why Masand is so stingy in scoring the nice film. Songs were v catchy, In short a lot lot better than Rockstar.

There is no big deal. Haters will always hate. Tell Aamir or Salman to make Movies like Swades, My Name is Khan, Chak de India. No one even dared to attempt it leave alone succeed in it.
