Guilty pleasure

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, John Abraham, Anil Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Amisha Patel, Jacqueline Fernandes

Director: Abbas-Mustan

Race 2 is the cinematic equivalent of a trashy novel. It never holds together as a sensible piece of work, but as an insensible piece of work, it’s pretty enjoyable. Director-duo Abbas Mustan create a cocktail of glamorous stars, exotic foreign locations, slick action scenes, and an outrageous plot. At nearly two-and-a-half hours, the film is too long by at least 20 minutes, but I’ll give this to Race 2: it’s seldom boring.

Never deviating too far from the blueprint of the 2008 film of which this is a sequel, Race 2 pits two suave conmen against each other in a tale of friendship, double-crossings, and revenge. Saif Ali Khan returns as Ranvir Singh, a loaded tycoon with an agenda. John Abraham, meanwhile, is Armaan Malik, a criminal kingpin forever exploiting opportunities to expand his empire.

Set in Turkey, our heroes are surrounded by fast cars and sexy women, and they get rich by swindling casinos, cheating at high-value card games, and stealing prized artifacts from museums. Anil Kapoor is back as RD, former cop and ravenous fruit-eater, and Amisha Patel has replaced Sameera Reddy as his new bimbo assistant, Cherry, whose very name lends itself to a slew of double meaning jokes.

The earlier film, Race, wasn’t a particularly smart thriller, but packed with so many unexpected twists it kept you on your toes. The big reveals in Race 2, however, can be guessed from a mile away, robbing the film of any unpredictability whatsoever.

What it’s lacking in originality, the film tries to make up for in sheer ambition. Abbas-Mustan don’t skimp on any effort to deliver a fast-paced, stylish entertainer, even if much of it turns out to be a hoot. From crazy gizmos that would make James Bond’s trusted ally Q turn a shade of green, to the sheer gratuitous skin show on display, Race 2 is a guilty pleasure all the way. Leading ladies Deepika Padukone and Jacqueline Fernandes sportingly show up to show off cleavage and leg, and John Abraham and Saif Ali Khan frequently strip down to their waists in an unapologetic buffet of beefcake.

And yet, compared to so many lazy blockbusters recently, Race 2 is skillfully made and sincerely performed. It’s not a film you’ll remember years from now, but you won’t be moaning and groaning through it either.

I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five for Abbas-Mustan’s Race 2. The film has no intellectual pretensions; its only ambition is to offer a good time. In that, it mostly succeeds.

  1. most irritating movie of d Year 2013..sir i agree with u..but i would rather rate it with 1.5…..comprised of cheap and non-realistic action scenes.

  2. Sir,
The movie is pathetic. I dont know how r u giving it two and half stars where it deserves only half a star..
forget the plot… the action scenes are also not very good.. if u remember the first chase by saif ali khan..
he chases that idiot sniper… and the background score is so poor… and the movie starts with anil kapoor’s voice over giving introduction and i thought the whole movie would be like this…
the songs were no good… the dialogues were so lame that even the front benchers wont clap..

I just want to ask those filmmakers… why dont they just try a little hard and at least come up with a product which is above average

  11. You giving “Matru” 4 stars has left me with a very bad taste in my mouth. I don’t think I will watch this piece of crap even for that “Guilty Pleasure”.

  12. I felt Race 2 was over cooked, with too many unecessary twists! Unlike wat Rajeev has said, Race 2 got me yawning often.

  13. 2 1/2 stars is too much. This film is filled with stupid juvenile one liners, unnecessary skin show and pathetic special effects. The story line would not even endear itself to the so called “mass audience” for which the movie is made. The girls especially Ameesha Patel have nothing to do except be eye candy. After doing this movie, where each person would just mouth stupid dialogues in minimal clothes, none of the people associated can call themselves an actor. I watched a popular Hindi movie after about a year and now I’m going off it for another year. It is a disgrace to the industry that such movies are made and applauded.

  15. Race 2 is a sequal to the movie Race.
The movie begins with the new character Arman Malik(John Abraham) who is an illegal money earned, wealthy personality in Turkeywhose step sister(Deepika) is a 50 percent partner in all shares.Saif arrives in Turkey to take the revenge of his girl friend(Bipasha) killed by the John. The film is better, there are some great scenes in it,the casino, john’s fight.
Saif and John’s role suit them.Jacqueline is so gorgeous,Deepik a is good.
I will give 3 out of 5 for Abbas Mastan’s Race 2.The film is a great entertainer.Wat ch It.

  16. Last line is all you need to read. Review, on the dot.

    Comment by Ankur — January 27, 2013 @ 9:46 pm

  17. The list of why this film sucks is endless. The assassin shown in the first scene could not have made it more obvious . A bomb which detonates on a shift in speed is easily removed and thrown into the water. The special effects are worse than those of the mythological shows on television. The dialogues between Ameesha patel(who seriously needs a life) and Anil Kapoor are deplorable. The first half an hour did provide the cheap thrills but at the end of the movie you want to rip the directors head off which is good since there are two of them for this film(hilariously calling themselves a director duo). I hope we do get better thrillers since our country is capable of making a Kahaani or a Gangs of Wasseypur.
    Cheers 🙂

  18. Awesome Movie

  19. Just an imitation of Hollywood B class movies. Never get involved in the movie. Deepika’s changing side makes the plot embarrassing. If every character change side without logic, anybody can script a movie.

  20. I almost cried when I saw a car coming out of a plane
    with parachutes !

    c’mon even Disney’s animated movies won’t do that !

    Comment by Gunjan — January 30, 2013 @ 2:26 pm

  21. Am really surprised at the ratings you provide for each movie, this movie is total crap, it is something similar to Manmohan desai movies, with no logic. You cannot give credit to slickness, because technology is available so they have packaged it, the novelty is giving a twist everywhere and we have to believe such stuff , on top of it we have a microphone in a ring, the best icing on the cake… come on MASAND you need to grow up, for rating such movies… We had some better movies then RACE 2.. the only good thing if one has to say is fast action, do not think back about the movie.

  22. Rajeev sir,

  23. Movie Review: Race 2….
Here we go.. I got three worlds for this one: Obvious..!!!! Obvious..!!! Obvious..!!!
The movie has been made exactly like Race, only difference is Race was much better. The twists and turns we saw in Race which made it a different from other movies. Those twist and turns are coppied exactly. The same thing, Yeh in the first 30min you will know how the story would unfold, seriously i could make out every next dialogue that was about to come.
One more thing… WHAT IN THE HELL is wrong with Bollywood when it come to ACTION- it’s completely out of my understanding, they make the action scenes so funny, seriously … And what is Amisha Patel doing in the movie am still thinking…….????? Hummmmm
Anil Kapoor : i feel they should have give a better role. its not about eating fruits all the time and he does not look like the joker kind of guy they are making out of him. But it has to be a time when he has to be intense. John, Saif, Deepika and jacqueline fernandez all of them did a good job when it comes to acting.
but i will give that extra mark to jacqueline fernandez – she is looking so hot, specially in the song Lat Lag Gayee.

The only problem with Race 2 is that they have made it exactly like Race and you will know what’s gona happen.
Its a waste of time, unless watching for free or 80% off (if you’re fan )

I was so excited and waiting for this movie , but it turns out to be a disappointment.
    Rating:1.5 / 5
