Deols deserve better

Cast: Dharmendra, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Nafisa Ali, Kulraj Randhawa, Anupam Kher, Mukul Dev

Director: Samir Karnik

Clocking in at almost three hours, Yamla Pagla Deewana is an exhausting but occasionally enjoyable comedy that only takes flight after intermission.

The film’s harebrained plot involves Sunny Deol as Paramveer, an NRI in Vancouver, arriving in Benares to reunite with his father and brother from whom he has been estranged for thirty years. His search leads him to lovable con-artist Dharam (played by the actor’s own father Dharmendra), and his accomplice-son Gajodhar (played by Bobby Deol). Before you know it Paramveer has volunteered to make a trip to Punjab to help his brother win back his sweetheart from her hotheaded brothers who’re holding her captive.

Packed with loud jokes, gratuitous item songs, a Priyadarshan-esque climax, and completely over-the-top fight scenes, this film knows exactly who its audience is and doesn’t shy away from wooing them. Fans of Sunny Deol are likely to cheer when the actor lets out that deafening roar in the film’s climax, which sends both the good guys and bad guys flying to the end of the room. It’s his Dabangg moment, and Sunny steps up to it sportingly. He is in fact the best thing about this loosely written film, that has at least a few good jokes that stick.

Like Poli the sardarni (played by Sucheta Khanna) who can barely speak any English but has studied everything there is to study about Canada, and hopes to marry an NRI someday.

Much of the real humor in this film is derived from the in-jokes. Bobby Deol gets to say: “Dharam, tu toh bahut bada kameena hai” at least a few times, and oddly it brings a smile to your face every time he says it. Or Dharmendra’s love for the bottle, another nudge-nudge-wink-wink moment that is hard to resist.

Alas, director Samir Karnik doesn’t know when to pull the brakes. The film hurtles along endlessly, and well overstays its welcome. The emotional scenes are cheesy, and Bobby’s romantic scenes quite needless.

It’s fun in parts but tires you out by the time it finally comes to an end. I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five for Yamla Pagla Deewana. If you’re a fan of the Deols and you enjoy old-fashioned masala entertainers, give it a chance. But the Deols can do better than this!

  1. Yup mate!
I agree the movie is a bit long and exhausting but what I would like to add to that is the fact that its an amazing entertainer. Its a genuine comedy film and not waste like ‘Welcome’ or ‘No Entry’.
It seriously tickles your funny bone quite a lot of times. And overall its a much better movie than the previous attempt to reunite the Deols on-screen.
I would give this movie at least 3 if not 3 1/2

I really like d movie a lot after such a long time I really gone mad by laughing. Yeah its right dat first half is lill bit slow but after interval film gives you more than you want. I dont know much bout critics part like Rajeev Masand says but for me its a paisa vasool movie and seen a actor of age 75 yrs and a hero of more than 250 films in wic many were blockbusters, super hits and yeah not like to miss dis opportunity to say a hero of ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTER and a no.1 position of box office till date “Sholay” to deliver such a great entertainment to me. Yeah i m talking bout Dharmendra whom Mr. Masand is missed or forgot to mention. I will give dis movie five out of five. This because I know the value of my hard earned money wic compel me to say so, I dont get a free passes like critics to watch movie to write review and say bla bla bla.. who cares I only see my returns after all I m a audience.

  9. i have seen almost all a grade hindi movies from 50s to 2010… for last 5 6 years i have gone through the reviews also.. i dont understand how you people review a movie like karzzz starring himeshor mnk with 4 or somewhere 5 stars.. even recently golmal 3 got such nice reviews ,people wrote triple dose of comedy action emotion…. bullshit.. y p d was better than golmal 3 in its action , comic, and emotional content…. yes u can say editing was not good or music was irritating… but movie was not exhausing at any point of time… boby’s love story didn’t work because they preffered family relations to work at that point….if they would have concentrated on both it it was not a masala comedy…dear critic watch it again and observe the diffrence in background music in love seens and family seens…actually there was no background music in love seen. i think you know what is the importance of background music… remember bhansali’s movies??

  10. Bobby Deol’s romantic act fails as it was not given any importance and Dharmendra’s magnetism falls infront of Sunny Deol’s extra-ordinary charm. His performance is gigantic and is also, one of the best I have seen in recent time. His charisma works in all his characterization; as a loving son, affectionate brother, caring husband, angry young man, powerful mortal and he even brings life and vigour to those illogical action scenes.his mode was changing from comedy to action to emotion from seen to seen and sometimes all 3 modes together in a seen and he has managed it with such a perfection that one cannot find even a sigle in any of his expression in whole movie..

  11. the movie is an oldfshined slapstik comedy revolves around the three heroes with out much to be done on the narration part..like a paid director who is doin the job to his boss who happens to be the deols

  12. The movie is a treat to watch though first half is bit slow and can be little better with few more thievery act…..but by the time u settle in second half movie picks the speed….Deols are amazing and drives movie thruout, sunny performance is exceptionally well and he looks super in his tees….bobby we could have expected much more from him, dharam ji is superr n even at age of 75 his performance carries an aura…kulraj looks obtuse, kudos to anupam, jonny lever n mukul dev for their performance…movie deserve 3.5 out of 5 star!!!! expecting its sequel….

  18. Come on man !
Please edit your ratings here !
Everyone agrees that its 1st half was not that good but just name a movie that has such an awesome 2nd half in recent years!?
I clearly remember, everyone was laughing like they are gone mad in the audi and you also know that making people laugh is the most difficult thing to do as it require proper timings ,,,,
Come on man, I just don’t know why most of the people don’t like deols!
You didn’t even mentioned the acting of sunny and dharmendra !
Sunny acted much better than shahrukh in this movie undoubtedly !!
    Have a nice day ! 🙂
