He has two Oscars, heaps of other national and international honours, and now he has an official biography. Music composer AR Rahman, who was in Mumbai to attend the release of his biography, The Spirit of Music (a collection of conversations with eminent film historian Nasreen Munni Kabir), spared a few minutes to discuss his early hits, the influence of Mani Ratnam on his career, and his journey to the peak of Indian film music.

  1. The question of the interview – “How do you decide which songs to sing?”! Could sense ARR’s discomfort while answering it. In the end he articulated his response pretty well.

  2. Rajeev – Love your work but I wish you would be more edgy/confrontational in your interviews. You sound like a fan (which you might well be) in this one. I came across this brilliant interview of C Ramachandra in which he gets this question – Question in Part 2 – “….kabhi chori kar ke sangeet ki rachna kee?” (At 3:45 in this video.) My respect for CR went several notches up as a result of his response to this question.
